Let Me Frighten You

By
Rhiannon Frater

I am inspired and intrigued by what frightens me. Writing about what I fear compels me to step outside my comfort zone and forces me to confront issues and themes that are not always easy to discuss.  Creating an imaginary world where terrible things happen to fictional characters is an easier (and safer) way to deal with issues we must all face at some time in our lives such as loss of loved ones, overcoming adversity, and evolving in the face of hardship. But it also allows me as a writer to also delve into much more frightening and rare occurrences such as war, natural disasters, and apocalyptic scenarios.

When I sat down to write the AS THE WORLD DIES zombie trilogy, I wanted to address the zombie apocalypse in a realistic manner. Though the scenario of the dead wandering the earth and eating the living is highly unrealistic, I wanted the characters of the story to be everyday people who somehow manage to live past the first terrifying days of the plague.  I didn’t want any Rambos or Ripleys in the mix. I wanted people who would resemble me and the reader.

Within each character in AS THE WORLD DIES there is familiarity. The characters are people we know or maybe even aspect of ourselves. They all have different strengths and weaknesses, personality flaws, and issues to overcome.  Because I wanted my characters to be everyday folks, their reactions to their terrible circumstances are grounded in reality.

For example, Jenni is a battered housewife/trophy wife at the beginning of the first book in the trilogy, THE FIRST DAYS.  After the devastating death of her children, Jenni is rescued by Katie. At first she is in shock, but slowly evolves throughout the series into a much stronger (yet not always stable) person. To make Jenni realistic, I drew on the coping mechanisms victims in abusive situations develop. The mind is amazing in its capacity to adapt to dire circumstances in order to ensure survival.  Jenni’s ability to basically cut off her emotions and compartmentalize allows her to survive better than people who have yet to develop these coping skills. Also, Jenni is extremely used to living in a life-threatening situation on a daily basis, so the zombocalypse is not much different in some respects.  Though sometimes readers get mad at Jenni for her immaturity (she was married at 17 and isolated from the world by her husband) and her bizarre actions, she remains one of the most popular, if not the most popular, character in the series.

Oftentimes readers of the series tell me how the characters in the book feel like friends. They worry about them, fear for them, and sometimes mourn them.  I have also been told how readers feel so attached to the world and the characters they feel like they are in the action.  I contribute this to the fact that they characters feel like people we know in our everyday lives, it is easy to slip into the dangerous world of AS THE WORLD DIES with them.

Though I love superheroes and magical/supernatural characters, in the end they are far removed from me with their abilities.  I know I can’t do the things they can do.  But I can easily imagine myself on a rescue run with Jenni and Katie, clutching a gun, sweating with anxiety, and feeling sick to my stomach with fear.  Somehow this translates to the reader as well.  I’ve heard so many stories of people having to put the book aside so their wildly beating heart could calm down. Honestly, I’ve stopped typing for the same reason.

There is a certain magic that sometimes happens in books that is hard for the author to explain to the reader, but after a lot of thought I do believe the reason why my books can be so terrifying is because the characters are not so far removed from you and me.
So when a zombie is moving relentlessly toward a character in SIEGE, the fast beating of your heart and the tremor of fear flitting through your mind is probably because  you could be character facing uncertain outcome.

Now the question is…do you survive?

The Review and Discussion
This Episode's Topic: Armando

The Arrival of Armando DeLeon feels like a crack in the dam before all the water comes flooding out to destroy everything. As each episode of In Darkness We Must Abide, I seem to be a little more attached to the Socoli Family, and at the end of each episode, I worry about what is going to happen in the next episode. In episode three, there is a strange foreboding feeling throughout the episode. I am now very nervous to find out what is in store next for Roman, Alisha, and especially Vanora.

Finally, we meet the stranger, Armando DeLeon who made a brief appearance in the beginning of the first episode. I will admit I have been curious to see how he met Vanora, and how he factored into the story. Episode 3 gives some insight into those details, but keeps a lot more behind closed doors for future episodes. I know as the serial continues those little details will continue to grow. The Arrival of Armando DeLeon has left me wanting more, so I cannot wait to “devour” the next episode.

Blog Tour: Mortality by Kellie Sheridan

ABOUT THE BOOK

Title: Mortality
Author: Kellie Sheridan
Series: The Hitchhiker Strain #1
Publication Date: March 19, 2013

After surviving a deadly plague outbreak, sixteen-year-old Savannah thought she had lived through the very worst of human history. There was no way to know that the miracle vaccine would put everyone at risk for a fate worse than un-death.
Now, two very different kinds of infected walk the Earth, intent on nothing but feeding and destroying what little remains of civilization. When the inoculated are bitten, infection means watching on in silent horror as self-control disappears and the idea of feasting on loved ones becomes increasingly hard to ignore.
Starving and forced to live inside of the abandoned high school, all Savannah wants is the chance to fight back. When a strange boy arrives with a plan to set everything right, she gets her chance. Meeting Cole changes everything. Mere survival will never be enough.

MY REVIEW

Mortality starts with the basic zombie storyline, deadly outbreak reanimating corpses trying eat everything in sight, but very quickly, I realized that this was not going to be a typical zombie story. As time went on, the story continued to surprise me, and with every new development I felt more connected to the characters. Mortality has a uniqueness that cannot be replicated, not without feeling like a black and white copy of a beautiful painting.

In Mortality, there is the first deadly viral outbreak that sweeps the world in a matter of days causing people to reanimate and try to eat their friends and neighbors. Everyone just tries to survive, while the power goes out, and the world begins to look like it is over. Then the governments fight back, the CDC develops a vaccination against the deadly virus. The world goes back to functioning, for a little while. While not a whole lot of people are inoculated against the virus compared to world population, enough are to cause the second outbreak. With the need to get the vaccine out there, the proper testing was not completed. Those who are vaccinated still succumb to the virus, it just takes longer, and it does not kill them. They are living breathing zombies, who have the strength and smarts to start wiping the human population off the face of the earth.

Savannah is not the typical zombie survival character; she is not just trying to survive and being happy to be alive for one more day. She wants to fight back, and take back the world from the infected that have stolen everything from her. So much so, that she is willing to leave everyone she knows to have the chance to make a difference. While this is mostly Savannah’s story, we are introduced to a second viewpoint from Zarah. While Savannah’s story picks up six months after the second outbreak, Zarah’s starts the day of the first outbreak. Zarah story is not related to Savannah’s but offers a viewpoint of the whole zombie apocalypse that Savannah’s does not, and it really makes the story the unique story that will forever be one of my favorites.

As this is only the first book in The Hitchhiker Strain, I love the fact that I will get to experience the characters again. I have hopes that things may start looking up for them, but I am wary because it is the zombie apocalypse. Mortality is a book that any fan of zombies needs to read, I think it is a game changer in that genre. I do not know where Kellie Sheridan is going to take this story next, but I cannot wait to find out.

 MY REVIEW

After what happened in the Episode 1: Death Comes Home, I was nervous for Vanora as to where the story was going to go. I will have to say, I like the unexpected turn that the story took, and I have hopes for the next episode. There is a lot of changes going around in the Socoli family in the episode. These are such short episodes, but so much happens in just a short amount of time. I love that I felt connected to the characters right away, and you start to feel for them almost immediately. There are many full length books cannot accomplish that feat right off the bat. Rhiannon Frater has a talent for sucking readers into the story right away, and I think the In  Darkness We Must Abide episodes prove that.

THE DISCUSSION
How do you think Vanora's life will be affected by all the changes around her?

My Opinion: I think that Vanora is already use to living the dark since she suffers from Albinism , so the changes are not going to be major. I think she still needs to be cautious, because of the circumstances of the change could still pose a risk to her safety. I am curious to see the extent the changes will affect her in the next episode.

ABOUT THE BOOK
Title: Moonset
Author: Scott Tracey
Series: The Legacy of Moonset #1
Publisher: Flux
Publication Date: April 8, 2013
Length: 384 Pages

Moonset, a coven of such promise . . . Until they turned to the darkness.
After the terrorist witch coven known as Moonset was destroyed fifteen years ago—during a secret war against the witch Congress—five children were left behind, saddled with a legacy of darkness. Sixteen-year-old Justin Daggett, son of a powerful Moonset warlock, has been raised alongside the other orphans by the witch Congress, who fear the children will one day continue the destruction their parents started.
A deadly assault by a wraith, claiming to work for Moonset’s most dangerous disciple, Cullen Bridger, forces the five teens to be evacuated to Carrow Mill. But when dark magic wreaks havoc in their new hometown, Justin and his siblings are immediately suspected. Justin sets out to discover if someone is trying to frame the Moonset orphans . . . or if Bridger has finally come out of hiding to reclaim the legacy of Moonset. He learns there are secrets in Carrow Mill connected to Moonset’s origins, and keeping the orphans safe isn’t the only reason the Congress relocated them ...
ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Scott Tracey is a YA author who lived on a Greyhound for a month, wrote his illustrated autobiography at the age of six, and barely survived Catholic school (and definitely not for the reasons you might think).
He is the author of WITCH EYES, chosen as one of Amazon’s Best LGBT Books of 2011, as well as an ALA Popular Paperback in the Forbidden Romance category.  The final book in the WITCH EYES trilogy, PHANTOM EYES, will be released in the fall of 2013.
He is also the author of MOONSET, a new series which will be released April 8, 2013, as well as a contributor to the SHADOWHUNTERS & DOWNWORLDERS anthology, edited by Cassandra Clare.
His career highlights include: accidentally tripping a panic alarm which led to nearly being shot by the police; attacked in a drive-thru window by a woman wielding a baked potato, and once moving cross country for a job only to quit on the second day.
His gifts can be used for good or evil, but rather than picking a side, he strives for BOTH (in alternating capacity) for his own amusement.

MY REVIEW
I have been a fan of Scott Tracey since I first read Witch Eyes, and I could not wait to experience his new series. Moonset is the first book in The Legacy of Moonset series, and it is unbelievably phenomenal. The five children of Moonset are the black sheep of the witching world, simply because of the travesties their parents committed when they were still in diapers. While they may not all be biological siblings, they are a family.

The oldest is Malcolm Denton, but he does not want anything to do with the magic that destroyed his family and his life. That leaves Justin Dagget as the spoke person and quasi leader, who is forced to deal with his twin, Jenna’s antics. Jenna is a notorious troublemaker, whose actions have resulted in the children of Moonset being repeatedly moved. Cole Sutter is the second youngest, and he is mischievous and likes to follow in Jenna’s shadow. Bailey is the youngest, and she is the most effected by the numerous moves and the constant changing of schools.

Moonset keeps the action coming from the very beginning. Just when you get comfortable, it ramps up the pace. It is a roller coaster ride of a read, with twists, turns, ups, and downs, but it is the best kind of roller coaster ride, terrifying but you are completely in love with it at the same time. I am seriously at a loss of words at how to describe how much a loved this book. I dropped everything I was doing and even made my daughter late for school just so I could finish a few more pages.

Now I will be sitting here waiting, eagerly waiting, for the next book in the series to see what is going to happen to the Moonset kids. I guess I will have to fill the void with Phantom Eyes when it comes out in October. I have said before and I will say it again, Scott Tracey is a genius.
